Alla Prima Bootcamp Supply List
To get started…
…you absolutely do not need any of these items specifically. What is important is that these work for me, and that I understand the utility of every part of my studio setup. If you're looking to learn my specific technique, using my supplies may be helpful, but they absolutely are not necessary.
The only exception to this is that if you are working in oil, please use Gamsol as your solvent rather than turpentine, terpenoid, spike oil or another brand of mineral spirits.
For more info on what makes Gamsol a safer choice, visit: https://gamblincolors.com/studio-safety/studio-safety-create-withoutcompromise/
The list below contains affiliate links, so I receive commission from purchases made.
If you have questions about any of these supplies, don't hesitate to reach out. :)
Studio Must-Haves:
A vertical easel that is adjusted to match up with your shoulder height (I use an Edge Pro Gear Paintbook for most paintings, but just about any easel will work)
A comfortable studio chair if you paint sitting down
A cool studio light. I opt for ‘daylight’ bulbs or 5000K LEDs
At least 8 feet to back up away from your canvas
Gray glass palette (That's what's in my Edge, but any palette is fine)
Paint scraper to clean the palette
Empty jars for holding brushes, solvents, varnish, soap
Murphy's Oil Soap (for cleaning brushes with dried paint)
Oily waste can to safely dispose of used rags or paper towels
Baby wipes for cleaning my hands + brush handles
Painting panels
DIY route: buy 3mm ACM from a sign supply and prep it using a lead ground or linen
Cheapest option: Centurion Oil Primed Linen Pad
Prefab MDF route: Claessens C15DP from Raymar
Prefab ACM route: Any of Trekell's Oil or Lead-primed ACM panels
Bamboo kitchen drying rack for wet panel storage
Books:
I like to listen to all of these on Audible (with the exception of the Schmid and Marine art books) while I paint, and can attest to enjoying them in audiobook format if any of you want to ‘read’ while you are at the easel!
